The problem: We’re all feeling the real estate crunch. Apartment sizes are shrinking (especially in cities like NYC) and kitchens are rapidly shrinking to the dimensions of closets. Curbed.com hunts around for the cheapest deals in NYC, and the least expensive square footage they could find in Manhattan for a rental was $177 per square foot, and that was for a very dirty building in a very questionable neighborhood. Are you willing to pay $177 per year for the space a chopping block would occupy? What if you could have your space and cook in it too?
With a cash-strapped lifestyle, home-cooked food is most economical, but how can we prepare dinner with a scarcity of counter space? People need a better solution than chopping veggies on their coffee table or desk.
The solution: We need a Murphy Chopping Block. Just like a Murphy Bed, this chopping block could easily mount flush against the wall and fold down as needed for cooking times. The Murphy Block is the perfect solution for the urban gourmet.
Sharper Image or Ikea should make this novel fold-out counter space that could be installed in apartments. Some clever and tool-handy homeowners have already fashioned fold-down counters for themselves, but we don’t yet have a mass-market solution.
All we need is for someone to adopt this product and make it a reality. Perhaps it will even start a trend for other space-saving kitchen appliances as well? What if we could have a fold-down toaster or a fold-down stove?
